I guess we’re not in those cotton fields back home anymore! (video)

It’s a biopic! It’s history! It’s a music video!

It’s long and complicated, so we’ll let them explain:

Algodón y V.I.N.O. is a music video written and directed by Jeremiah Joe Ocañas that follows a 12-year-old boy’s days of working in the cotton fields of Danevang, TX, to following his dream of moving to California and today, while living that dream in the mural adorned Highland Park, he reminisces on the journey as an adult.

The Chipotle Diaries: Is this pseudo Mayan ‘art’ a tribute or ripoff?

chipotlewallWhen we last visited the Chipotle Mexican Grill saga, the issue was the inability of the food chain to find any Latino writers to feature on their writer-decorated packaging.

Have they learned? An observant blogger and Mayan art geek in Philadelphia visited a Center City Chipotle Mexican Grill location and did a quick double-take when he saw the bas-relief artwork on the walls.

Here’s how University of Pennsylvania grad student Taylor Jones tells the story:

Does your animation project need a Latina maid?

othercharactersanimatedmaidmariaDoes your video animation project need stereotyped cartoon actors?

How about a Latina?

How about we name her “Maria,” oh, and get this, she’s a “housemaid!”

Maria is ready to say “¡Si, Señora!” in all your corporate video, web avatar and/or white privileged productions.

Sure we could have made Maria the “cool girl” character (above), but get real.

This is America!

All this and more from mCharacter. [Windex not included, deviousness available for an additional charge.]

Chipster’s Delight: Calavera fez for you stylin’ vatos (photos, video)

With everybody and her tio dressing up for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, it’s important to stand out from the crowd with a bold fashion-forward statement. For some stylish chipsters, that means a calavera-themed fez.

Lucky for us, that’s exactly what our ‘chuco suave model, Pablo from the Internets, is wearing! Pablo’s embroidered velvet chapeau is a new Fall style from San Diego’s Fez-o-rama.com. You don’t just wear a fez, pochos. A fez wears you.

Hey, you kids in Australia: Don’t cut class or else! (video)

The Land Down Under offers this public service announcement urging high school kids to stay in school and don’t be a slacker.

We don’t care if it’s a perfect day to cut class and enjoy skimpy swimsuits and sexytime surfing.

If you mates and sheilas go walkabout, you’ll have no one to blame for the consequences but your own billabong. Karma is a boomerang.

Latino Field Studies: ‘Differing Perceptions of Time’ (video)

This Latino Field Study anthropology video examines a culturally-distinctive mannerism many Anglos find confusing – the difference in the way Latinos perceive time. The experts also show you how to calculate when to expect a Latino for a 5 PM appointment – so-called “Latino Time.”

Hey! You’re lookin’ for tacos in all the wrong places (photos)

necklaceAs POCHO amigo Gustavo Arellano pointed out in his book Taco USA, America loves tacos.

How much does America love tacos, you ask? Taco imagery is everywhere — jewelry (necklace, above), toys, drinks, desserts, babies, kitties, doggies, purses, rear-view mirrors. And how could we make a listicle without the pink taco? [The pink taco final photograph may be NSFW depending on your work. We don’t think it is, but you never know, tu sabes?]
