Lalo Alcaraz: My Big Fat Mexican Detroit Weekend (photos)
I spent several days in Detroit this weekend with the UNITY Diversity in Journalism group, bringing our perspective as journalists of color to two vibrant local communities.
We had a panel at the gorgeous Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, and discussed the situation of Arab American media portrayals from our varied panelists.
At the end of this fruitful panel, I brought up how my last name Alcaraz, has Arabic language roots, and how I looked it up online to translate it. I was hopping it meant, Great Warrior, or Smart Guy, but instead it came up as “The Cherry.”

This is why they hate us: The Hamilton-Beach breakfast burrito maker
Making a breakfast burrito is hard work, especially in the morning when it’s time to eat breakfast. There’s the delicate cracking of the eggs thang, the slicing of the cheese procedure, the tricky cooking and not burning, and finally the delicate assembly work. All in the morning! Maybe even before the cafecito kicks in! Aye dios mio! What’s a hungry pocho to do?
Chillax, homie, We’ve got your modern gadget right here: The new Breakfast Burrito Maker from Hamilton-Beach, your favorite manufacturer of stupid single-use appliances.

Korea’s Mexicana Chicken now in strawberry, banana, melon flavors
Korean fast food chain Mexicana Chicken wants you stop, look, and listen, and then try their new pink strawberry chicken, yellow banana chicken and green cantaloupe chicken. For realz.
The company’s “Stoplight Chicken” — small pieces of boneless chicken coated in flavored powders colored red, yellow, and green — are the three colors of a traffic signal. Get it?
Apparently emboldened by the previous success of chicken nuggets coated in cheese powder, Mexicana has decided to go all out and add strawberry, banana, and melon to the available flavors for their fried chicken. However, according to online reaction, the result is not great.

Bienvenidos a Minneapolis, Minnesota, Aztlan (photos)
During the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Minneapolis last weekend I decided to take a break and visit East Lake Street.
That’s the heart of the city’s Mexican and Somali immigrant communities. I had tacos at Taqueria Los Ocampo then strolled down East Lake and discovered scenes one might find in East Los Angeles, Houston’s Northside or Albuquerque’s South Valley.
The murals were a reflection of a people who came north…way north.
I like these photos especially:

Grammar vigilantes are on a mission to correct Quito graffiti (photos)
They may not be the heroes that Ecuador needs or deserves but they sure do get pissed off when you don’t know where a comma goes.
Since January, vigilantes in Quito, Ecuador have been correcting mistakes in the city’s graffiti.
These guerillas use stencils cut from pizza boxes to add commas, question marks and, ah yes, even accent marks to imperfect street art around town.
The members of Acción Ortográfica Quito take their pseudonyms (or superhero names) from punctuation marks: Diéresis, Tilde and Coma.
Diéresis, a 30-year-old lawyer/vigilante, told The Guardian in an interview, “Grammatical errors cause stress. We only make texts comprehensible that otherwise would not send any message whatsoever.”

Visiting Belgrade, Serbia? Mexico is so close! In Burrito! (photos)
Pictures speak a thousand (very orange) palabras, and when it comes to words, we can’t do any better than the self-penned description of Burrito, a Mexican restaurant in Belgrade, Serbia, in the former Yugoslavia, right by the Nikolai Tesla Museum (see map below):

Tips for crossing the border, paper fortune teller style (photos, video)
What do you need to know when crossing to El Norte from Tijuana? One artist who lived that life incorporated all she learned into origami “cootie catcher” fortune teller paper tip sheets. (Silent video, above.)
Isabella Cruz-Chong grew up in Tijuana, she explained to POCHO in an email, “and I would constantly cross between Tijuana and San Diego. The instructions originated from common rules most people from there know, personal instructions that my parents used to tell me when I was growing up. Some are my own that I have learned that are important to be aware of. All of the instructions are written in my own words.”

Summer’s here and the time is right for airing out your feet (photos)
It’s summer now, and it’s hot out. And big bulky cowboy boots are far from ideal when it comes to keeping your tootsies chill. What’s a sweaty-footed cowgirl or cowboy to do?

Unseen for half a century: Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe (photos, video)
Selected photos of Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe – locked away for half a century – will go on exhibit in London next week.
After Kahlo’s death in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera shut her belongings in a bathroom at their Mexico City home, the Blue House, [video, below] the marvelous house they shared—and then insisted that it be locked up until 15 years after his death (which, in the event, happened in 1957).
In fact, the room wasn’t opened until 2004, when Ishiuchi Miyako was given permission to photograph its intimate contents.
The photographs will be on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London from May 14 through July 12.

My report and photos from the set of Adam Sandler’s ‘Ridiculous Six’
I had to post this after reading that the actors who walked off Adam Sandler’s Ridiculous Six set get tagged as heroes and those who stayed, like me, get belittled.
My photograph (above) shows two of the men who walked off and the lady who stayed. They’re discussing the film’s infamous script, just after they talked to one of the assistant directors about the script.

Rare photos show Frida Kahlo in the 1950s
In 1950, photographer Gisèle Freund began a two-week visit to Mexico – and stayed for two years.
In Mexico City, Freund hooked up with artistic power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Her black-and-white photographs of the pair are now available in the newly published Frida Kahlo: The Gisèle Freund Photographs.

REPUBLICAN LETTER TO IRAN!
No shit. We grabbed all the text and images from your House Judiciary Committee’s website as soon as we saw it so we could present it to you in all its animated GIF-y wonder. We made it better, though, since the GOP geeks apparently don’t know how to resize GIFS, even though they’re all GIFs of white people! And they do not — I REPEAT DO NOT — like President Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

What’s for breakfast? Breakfast tacos or breakfast burritos?
Here in Los Angeles, we like breakfast burritos. We like the breakfast burritos so much that breakfast burritos can be enjoyed in Jewish delis, Chinese restaurants, Greek diners, burger stands, sushi joints, lunch trucks, Mexican restaurants, old-school coffee shops and fancy places near the beach.
LA.Eater, for example, just published a list of three dozen breakfast burrito destinations, which includes Mid-City 24/7 Lucy’s Drive-In (Gustavo Arellano’s go-to place for chile relleno burritos), Anthony Bourdain pick Tacos Villa Corona in Atwater Village (photo, above) and ∼$12 burritos at the The Farm in Beverly Hills which are filled with aged cheddar cheese and applewood smoked bacon.
But breakfast burritos are an anomaly in some parts of Texas, where breakfast tacos are the norm.
