“Marisol, I’m right here! Must you scream so loud? They’re GiuseppeZanotti and I bought them at Barney’s when Sandra and I were in New York. I think.”
I chuckled to myself. My sister’s personality was on max and it left me kind of confused.
“What’s so funny?” Marisol said as she walked to the bar in our hotel room.
“Nothing, Marisol,” I whispered to myself and walked towards the bathroom. Nothing, girl.
“Well, I’m glad that I can finally meet some of these big-wig co-workers of your husband. I mean, medical school and then doing my residency at Emory hasn’t left me a lot of time for fun. I need to have some fun.”
I was curling my last lock when I heard Marisol scream, “Are you listening to me, Lola?”
“Yes!” I yelled.
“So what’s next Marisol?” I asked.
It was quiet until I could hear her footsteps behind me.
“You’re not happy?” Marisol asked.
I heard the words come out of her mouth, annoyed at her asking something like that. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh nothing I just remember growing up you were always trying to fix everyone else’s problems. Now you seem to be a little self-righteous and unconcerned with anyonebut your new life.” Marisol said.
I turned around and touched her forehead to make sure she didn’t have a fever.
Marisol exclaimed, “Yes! Oh. Em. Gee. Yes that’s the Lola I know.”
“Are you going crazy Marisol?” I asked as she knocked my hand away.
“No not at all sister.” Marisol answered as she walked out of the restroom to answer the door.
I took one last look at myself in the mirror. I looked good enough. When I heard Josey and Ignacio speaking, I ran to meet them.
“It’s so good to see you Cuñado.”
Ignacio picked me up and affectionately said, “It’s good to see you Cuñada.”
“Look you two better chill before I get out the Vaseline and braid this hair and beat a bitch town Chi Town Style.” Josey said playfully.
All three of us laughed then Josey looked over at Marisol and said, “Don’t tell me just because you are a doctor now means you are a cut above the rest of us.”
“I know you are the last person that should be making assumptions about people, but I will keep my mouth shut because I wouldn’t want to ruin your perfect life.” Marisol countered, her tone clipped.
“Ladies, ladies stop this we are sisters and its New Year’s Eve.” I said trying to diffuse the tension between them.
I picked up my phone and said, “Let me call Raul to see what’s keeping him.”
“Lola, Raul is in the Lobby with two of my fraternity brothers, Armando and Cesar, from Georgetown,” Ignacio informed me before I dialed my husband’s number.
“Well are they coming up to join us?”
“Yes they were grabbing a quick cocktail.”
My phone vibrated in my hand and I answered without checking the number, “Hello?”
“Hi bitches guess who’s in front of the St. Regis.”
“Are you serious? Get your ass up here now!” I replied, excited to hear from Sandra. When I hung up all eyes were on me.
“Who was that?” Marisol asked.
“Sandra,” I beamed.
“You still talk to that puta?” Josey asked.
Marisol interrupted. “Is it that time of the month for you Josey!”
Ignacio excused himself from our anticsto go down and get the guys.
“Marisol, I’m not happy with the lack of family respect you’ve shown over the last few years,” Josey explained.
“¡Josephina no comprende mi hermana! You see the way you talk to a PediatricPhysician is such as this. Hi Marisol I am so proud you became a Doctor and you didn’t have to fuck your way there.” Marisol said, as she turned and poured a large measure of the whiskey.
“How the fuck am I supposed to congratulate you hermana if I can’t even reach you on the phone?”
I looked at Josey’s beautiful but sad hazel eyes and knew how desperate she was to have a meaningful relationship with Marisol.
“If you are so concerned about my well-being I suggest you revise your vocabulary about me because words like Cochina, Uppity, Pendeja or white washed are definitely not me.” Marisol said defensively.
I wasn’t sure how much more of this bickering I could take, I did my level best to calm things down. “Can’t we just be sisters who respect each other? We all really want to have some quality time. It is New Year’sEve. We can sort things out in the morning.”
I was relieved as Raul walked through the door followed by Ignacio, Sandra and two good looking guys. Everybody exchanged hugs and Sandra’s wit lightened the atmosphere.
Cesar enigmatically kissed my hand, glanced around the room and said, “I haven’t seen this many Latina women since the last episode of ‘Rubi on Univision.’
Everybody laughed.
“So you watch novellas?” I asked, flushed. He was Hollywood handsome, standing at more than six feet tall.
“No not really I just got caught in the moment!” Cesar said.
We all laughed again. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him.
“Excuse me could you help me with my dress in the restroom?” Sandra asked me.
I followed her to the bathroom and helped her fasten her dress. “Why aren’t you in Brazil?”
“Honey I couldn’t stomach Bruce Leeany longer!” Sandra said feigning weariness.
“That’s not very nice!”
“What’s not very nice? His name is Bruce Lee and he happens to be a pilot!”
We both laughed.
“I saw you giving Cesar the up and down look,” Sandra whispered. “I asked for your help so that Raul wouldn’t catch you flirting with his friend.”
“I was not flirting.” I lied. I was so horny I was getting to the point where I’d consider screwing someone other than Raul.
Sandra winked. “Hands off. That Mexican Brad Pitt is mine!”
