Unseen for half a century: Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe (photos, video)
Selected photos of Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe – locked away for half a century – will go on exhibit in London next week.
After Kahlo’s death in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera shut her belongings in a bathroom at their Mexico City home, the Blue House, [video, below] the marvelous house they shared—and then insisted that it be locked up until 15 years after his death (which, in the event, happened in 1957).
In fact, the room wasn’t opened until 2004, when Ishiuchi Miyako was given permission to photograph its intimate contents.
The photographs will be on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London from May 14 through July 12.

Rare photos show Frida Kahlo in the 1950s
In 1950, photographer Gisèle Freund began a two-week visit to Mexico – and stayed for two years.
In Mexico City, Freund hooked up with artistic power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Her black-and-white photographs of the pair are now available in the newly published Frida Kahlo: The Gisèle Freund Photographs.
Diego Rivera’s Wife Frida Kahlo ‘Gleefully Dabbles’ in Works of Art
In the early 1930s, Frida Kahlo joined her (at the time) much more famous husband Diego Rivera in Detroit, Michigan, where he was prepping murals. The Detroit News caught up with the couple and the resulting feature story is in a new exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Art.
“Senora Diego Rivera,” as she’s called in the article, didn’t let Diego hog the limelight, even though she was dressed in a “foolish little ruffled apron.”
“Of course he [Diego] does pretty well for a little boy,” she told reporter Florence Davies, “but it is I who am the big artist.”

Pocho Ocho secret items from Frida Kahlo’s closet *not* on display
While visitors to the Casa Azul Museo Frida Kahlo in Mexico City think they’re viewing a definitive selection of items from Kahlo’s closet that have been hidden for 58 years, POCHO has learned that curators, sensitive to the artist’s legend, have held back some items from public display.
Here are the top eight items you won’t see:
8. Lifetime membership card, Hoop Earrings of the Month Club
7. Photoshop 0.1 beta test DVD
6. Leon Trotsky’s private cellphone number

Pocho Ocho ways birthday girl Frida Kahlo has influenced our lives
Those eyebrows, that hair, those monkeys. Happy birthday Frida Kahlo! We celebrate your awesome influence on our pocho lives by listing the top eight ways you’ve influenced us.
8. Made us think we, too, could be an artist. After all, she painted her own reality, right?
7. Inspired us to stop plucking your eyebrows. Or maybe you just didn’t feel like a chola anymore.
6. Helped us fall in love. If Frida could love a crazy fat man like Diego Rivera, surely the love of your life — and his panza — are worth the ride, too!

Mexclusive: ‘Google Doodle’ honors Frida Kahlo’s 105th birthday!
(PNS reporting from SILICON VALLEY) In honor of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s 105th birthday Friday, Google is featuring a special Google Doodle commemorating her contributions to international art.
Born on July 6, 1907, Kahlo was a surrealist painter and smoker who is best known for her brilliant self-portraits, her tragic life and her stormy relationships with such global figures as Diego Rivera, Leon Trotsky and Josephine Baker.
Kahlo was known to be uncompromising in her art, her politics and her famous monobrow, which launched a feminist revival and Fridamania craze in the 1990s and also extended the co-ed bisexual experimentation stage from one to two semesters.

Searching for Eldorado’s City of Gold, modern ‘goldbugs’ infest AZ
(PNS reporting from THE HATE STATE OF ARIZONA) It’s a mystery from history that’s too shiny to die:
Where exactly is Eldorado, the famed City of Gold built by ancient Aztlanians and hidden from the brutal “conquistadors?”
A swarm of recession-smacked out-of-towners asked the question again last week in Yuma County, AZ. The answer included injuries, Hollywood and politics as usual.
