Close Up Magic: The ‘Mexican’ Paper Tear (video)

The Leipzig Torn And Restored Paper Effect is a classic routine for sleight-of-hand parlor magicians. In this new video, Scott Alexander presents the prestidigitation trick “Mexican” estyle, which involves a bad bigote, a sombrero, and is that a zerape? K tricky, no? These magic papeles are for sale — only with a magician’s recommendation, of course — but if you buy them, ask the company to make the stereotypes disappear, OK?

Unseen for half a century: Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe (photos, video)

tehuana_dresssqSelected photos of Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe – locked away for half a century – will go on exhibit in London next week.

fridaydiegoaskidsDangerous Minds reports:

After Kahlo’s death in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera shut her belongings in a bathroom at their Mexico City home, the Blue House, [video, below] the marvelous house they shared—and then insisted that it be locked up until 15 years after his death (which, in the event, happened in 1957).

In fact, the room wasn’t opened until 2004, when Ishiuchi Miyako was given permission to photograph its intimate contents.

The photographs will be on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London from May 14 through July 12.

Los Mariachi: A song for ‘Señorita’ (#TBT music video)

losmariachisenoritaThis relatively unknown 2011 (or 2013?) video from Mexican rockers Los Mariachi just re-appeared on Vimeo with much better video and audio than the YouTube original and we’re glad it did. Señorita features the band’s awesome sweet Mexican metal – they got the action, they got the motion, yeah, the boys can play! That’s Ian Alvarez on soulful vocals, Carlos Casquejo shredding on the guitar, Ruben Balagot pumping it out on bass, Eddie Perez playing lyrical keyboards, and JamJam Emmanuel hitting hard on drums. Firme rock!

Area man doesn’t care what Cinco de Mayo is all about, yo!

shirtmodel(PNS reporting from EAST LOS) Ruben Covarrubias astounded family and friends here Sunday night when he admitted that the history of Cinco de Mayo didn’t concern him and he’d always thought “May 5 was Mexican Independence Day, so like so what?!”

“I don’t care what it’s about, yo!” he told everyone within earshot of the backyard grill. “I just always celebrated it with MEChA and at school. Partay!”

Friends and family at the Covarrubias’ weekly carne asada were aghast. Some reconsidered whether they’d be driving back to El Sereno next week, multiple witness reported.

Me? I’m drinking a cerveza and contemplating Cinco de Mayo

I approach el Cinco de Mayo with excitement and ambivalence.

I learned the history of the Battle of Puebla as the son of proud Mexicans, who happened to be immigrants. The story goes: On the fifth of May 1862, a small Mexican army kicks French butt. Bueno.

My dad and grandmother worked at the Cinco de Mayo restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway in a small L.A. harbor town. My association with the day is food, drink, familia, history, cultura.

Beetles with rhinestones are the living jewelry of Mexico (videos)

Bugs. Bugs with backpacks of rhinestones. Bugs with backpacks of rhinestones on gold-plated chains. Bugs with backpacks of rhinestones on gold-plated chains you wear as jewelry. Does Mexican PETA know about this?

“Meet the Makech, the Bedazzled Beetles Worn as Living Jewelry,” writes The Smithsonian.com. “The unusual bugs from the Yucatán have a backstory as colorful as their rhinestone-studded rumps.”

Pat Boone sings ‘Speedy Gonzales, Why Don’t You Come Home?’ (video)

America’s favorite nice clean young white boy, Pat Boone, had a 1962 hit with this love-sick appeal to our hero, Mexico’s fastest mouse. “Speedy Gonzales, Why Don’t You Come Home?” he asks.

In this video, a fan mashes up a Warner Bros. Speedy cartoon with Boone’s music.

Speedy, of course, is voiced by the great Mel Blanc.

Official Report: La Migra’s border drone results not on fleek (videos)

droneThe Department of Homeland Security Inspector General may not have the sad, exactly, but his end-of-2014 report on border-patrolling drones was not very happy.

Tio Sam, the Inspector General recommended, should spend his Migra-Industrial Complex money somewhere else. More drones are not on fleek, the report concluded.

The LexisNexis newsroom pulled this quote from the report:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Unmanned Aircraft System Program Does Not Achieve Intended Results or Recognize All Costs of Operations

Although CBP’s Unmanned Aircraft System program contributes to border security, after 8 years, CBP cannot prove that the program is effective because it has not developed performance measures.

PETA: Quinoa vs chia cartel wars hurt Fido, Fluffy over Christmas

fidofluffy2(PNS reporting from AUSTIN) Fido and Fluffy have become collateral damage in the war between the rival QuinoaTraficante and ChiaTraficante agricultural cartels.

Recent attacks on Mexican chia seed production — apparently at the hands of rival-cartel-affiliated quinoa growers — have left thousands of local seed-deprived Chia Pets cold, shivering and hairless this Yuletide season, Texas People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) told PNS.

PETA said this includes Fido and Fluffy, of Barton Creek, pictured (above) in the organization’s latest Web ad.
