‘Maybe (I Grew Up…)’ (@SchemeNavarro audio)
Last month we published the powerful essay Maybe I grew up in a Latino and African-American neighborhood by Navarro, the Chicago-based hiphop artist formerly known as Scheme. Now it’s back, with music:
Maybe I grew up in a Latino and African-American neighborhood
Maybe I grew up in a mostly Latino and African American neighborhood because that was where my parents could pay rent.
Maybe they could only pay rent there because my parents immigrated into this country with only a bag of clothes. Maybe they worked 16 hrs a day 7 days a week in ranches cutting cabbage. Maybe they worked 2 or 3 jobs, and yet it was barely enough to get by.

War on drugs, war on immigrants are racism in action (video)
America’s “mass incarceration and the U.S. deportation machine are deeply intertwined,” according to Colorlines.com. “And black immigrants get swept up in both systems. A new video from the Black Alliance for Just Immigration spells it out.”

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? The Border Patrol says ‘Willkommen!’ (video)
Just like President John F. Kennedy who charmed the world with this line in the 1960s, “Ich bin ein berliner” is magic.

OK City police bomb squad X-rays burrito, decides it’s safe
A potentially dangerous burrito put the bomb squad of the Oklahoma City police on alert last week. NewsOK has the story:
A man brought a Thermos-type container into the Santa Fe Briefing Station, 9000 S Santa Fe Ave., on Thursday afternoon. The man said he found the container on his lawn and noticed tinfoil showing out of the lid, police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.
Officers told the man to leave the container outside and the police bomb squad X-rayed the item, Nelson said.
Authorities were cautious of the item because of how heavy the container was and the tinfoil protruding from the lid.
The suspicious thermos payload turned out to be a burrito, Nelson said.

Once upon a time with the Bellevue, WA Police Department (photo)
Once upon a time in November 2010, a police detective named Jim Lindquist (from Bellevue, Washington) needed some help from the both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking communities. He had an idiosyncratic way of expressing himself in Spanish. “A” for effort?

Why the Internets were invented: Hispanic cops taking selfies (photos)
“Selfie” is a real word, you know. Officially! “Selfie” and “twerk” were added to the Oxford English Dictionary Online in August.
And that’s why we’re extra pleased to present just a taste of the excellent Tumblr Cops Taking Selfies Of course, we’re just featuring photos of two officers with Hispanic names because it is still Hispanic Heritage Month until October 15, but you can click through for equally-charming Anglos and some additional Hispanics we might have missed !

Brazilian demonstrator provides live music for riot squad (videos)
When the riot squad (GATE/SWAT) went to break up a June 26 demonstration in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, one sax player provided them with live musical accompaniment, The Imperial March aka Darth Vader’s theme from Star Wars.
Here’s the original soundtrack version by John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra:

Reese Witherspoon goes chola, defends her man from pig cops
(PNS reporting from ATLANTA) Reese Witherspoon trotted out her East L.A. roots over the weekend after her husband was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Who do you think you are?” Reese demanded during the traffic stop. “You can’t treat my man like that! Do you know who I am? If you don’t know now, you will soon, cabrón! Ain’t nobody mess with my man but me!”
Witnesses said Witherspoon’s head bobbed back and she waved her arms erratically.

CNN identifies three Mexican mujeres wanted for Boston bombings
(PNS reporting from BOSTON) CNN has identified the three Mexican women suspected of the Marathon bombing, sources say:
Three obese Mexican women…are the chief suspects in the Boston Marathon attack.
“My top-level sources have confirmed that the individuals depicted in these photos planned, coordinated, and put into effect this week’s deadly bombing,” said CNN reporter John King, speaking of the trio of overweight Hispanic women, two of whom reportedly died in the late 1990s and one of whom has never actually visited the United States.

I created the above image as a response to the outrageous and murderous police brutality by the Anaheim Police Department recently against two young men in the Anaheim barrio. The families are not only dealing with protesting against the Anaheim PD and City Hall, but also the costs of funerals for these two men, arguably executed by the Anaheim PD.
Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Zip-a-Dee-Guns; Hola Anaheim, We’re Havin’ Fun
Now in the shadows of the world’s most famous amusement park residents of Anaheim are bravely (and in some cases stupidly) confronting the Anaheim Police Department, an at times callous, authoritative government power that isn’t accustomed to being questioned even when it executes people. Crisis always spurs creativity and the most original ideas are presently forming outside of the gates of Disneyland.

From Coldrank for Trayvon: ‘Black Man’ (music video)
Citing Malcom X, MLK and Michael Jackson, rapper Coldrank‘s Black Man explores, shall we say, discrepancies in society’s treatment of blacks killing blacks, blacks killing whites and whites killing blacks. And those that don’t learn from history, he reminds us, are doomed to repeat it. Directed by Joe Mexican.
Hate immigrants? Love homemade bombs? Come to Kansas!
(PNS reporting from TOPEKA) Are you angry? Is your ugly truck plastered with bigoted stickers? Do you have homemade explosives at home and in your vehicle? Are you a veteran who hates immigrants and anyone who “no-speako-the-English?”
No problemo, amigo! Come to Topeka, KS where you can park your truck full of homemade explosives next to a government building and the police will look the other way!
That’s right, friend – you can build all the homemade bombs you want (now with deadly shrapnel!) pile them in your beat-up truck and bring ‘em on down to the Kansas State building for a Ka-booming good time! Yes, you can be just like Timothy McVeigh and plot endless schemes of domestic terrorism and the cops in Kansas will just shrug their shoulders say, “Whoops…”
